When Jodie Bishop; public art officer for Plymouth City Council and Clint Jones the city centre manager approached the course to create two murals with a combined length of over 30 metres we knew it would be a real challenge to pull off. But with two sites in the centre of town on Cornwall Street and Goerge Street, it was an opportunity that was too good to miss. And we're glad to say that we pulled it off. Josh Neal Jo Larsen-Burnett Emma Carlisle Bex Edwards Joe Lyward Abigail Regler Tombenvenn Tom James Jake Rawlinson Alex Walker and Pip Stewart created one twelve metre long mural as a collective. Their surreal concept was to create an imaginary street from different building in Plymouth's past and populate it with historical characters and everyday people shopping and interacting with each other. Pip Stewart developed the limited pallette of colours that was so crucial to pull the whole image together and it was then down to Joe Lyward to take on the task of art direction and design to pull all the individual images together. This was a difficult technical task, working with multiple files on a massive scale in photoshop.
Below you can see how Jake Rawlinson developed the characters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a soldier from the English civil war from rough development sketches to finished artwork.
And below you can see the same kind of process with the devlopment work of Jo Larsen-Burnett currently studying in year 2.
below are initial studies created by Joe Lyward.
This is the overall plan we used to help Mark Powell's team at the Sign Shop install the murals, it was down to him and his team to handle the difficult task of putting up each of the 54 individual vinyl stickers that make up the designs.
The design at the George Street end of the site was created by seven illustrators worked who six stand alone pieces, each one inspired by busking and street performance. As this site is often used for this purpose by local musicians. We decided to celebrate this, brightening up the whole frontage with six great examples of cutting edge contemporary illustration. The illustrators that worked on this end of the site have all graduated over the last three years and we felt it was a great way to showcase their work and advertise how brilliantly their image making skills have continued to evolve after the course has ended. As you will see if you visit their websites they have all created really strong visual identities, something we on the course really aim to achieve, a genuine visual identity that also has strong commercial potential. We wanted to show you some of the roughs and sketches that made up the design process that went into developing the six images; and below are a selection of drawings made during the creation of the final artwork along with the final images themselves.
