Introduction
Claire
Harpers work focuses on the visceral in as much as it finds its inspiration
from the intuitive interpretation of narratives, memories and observations. It
is about the artist’s individual perception of how something appears, or how
one captures the essence of something; a moment in time, a tree, a deer, a
melancholic or humorous event. Much of the poignancy within the work is
generated both through observation and the temporal, aligned with process,
line, colour, surface and the captive image. Recurring themes include man and
beast, the bizarre, costumes, the mythical and the theatrical arena.
Current Research
Claire’s
practice is her research; much of studio practice is about the ‘doing’ and the
reflection of that practice. This practice has evolved through an understanding
of drawing, printmaking, collage and painting . Much of her thinking has its
roots in the histories, rituals and myths of the countryside, since moving to
the South West twelve years ago.
